I
was born on March 6, 1982 in Tepatitlán de Morelos, Jalisco. My parents
are Antonio Nuño Hernández and María Sánchez Romero.I am the ninth
daughter of a family of nine and I was born with progressive Muscular
Dystrophy. For a while, I was able to move around on my knees but,
before turning 9, it became necessary for me to use a wheelchair. I was
raised in a community called San Agustín, Municipality of Tototlán. I
started studying like all kids at the age of 1, even though at times,
this had to be postponed due to my condition. As time went by, I
finished my preparatory studies with a semi-traditional school
curriculum. I did my schooling in the following institutions:
Primary:
Niños Héroes in San Agustín, Municipality of Tototlán
René Nucamendi Sánchez in Tepatitlán
Juan Escutia School in Tepatitlán.High School
In Juan Villalpando School.College Preparatory courses: At CEAL (Center of Studies Alteños) with a semi-traditional curriculum.
I remember when in 1991 Mr. José Moreno Hernández (deceased) would tell
me with enthusiasm that he could teach me to paint with my mouth, an
idea that I was reluctant to accept; so, he continued trying for a long
time. Every time I would visit he would encourage me. Finally in 1996,
after much encouragement, I started to learn how to sketch with him. My
brothers were already painting with their mouths and doing very well. I
liked their work very much. The end result was that I was accepted to
the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists in 1998. After Mr.
John Grepe took my first piece of work so I could apply as a grantee of
the Association, I felt very sad. It seemed as though he had taken a
part of me, an indispensable member, but the great reward was my
acceptance. Then a felt realized, a valuable person with an important
activity. I started feeling capable of doing something valuable,
concluding that I had dignity and that I would be the first to show it
to society. We should always feel proud of showing our art. I have held
exhibitions in the Federal District, in Guadalajara, Tonalá, Ocotlán,
Tepatitlán, Arandas and La Barca Jalisco. We´ve had showings in
Atotonilco and Arandas. In the year 2000 I started studying painting and
drawing in Ocotlán, and continue to do so, with Prof. Rubén Zavala, who
is also a member of the Association. I took a short course in the
Cabañas Institute; I have knowledge of oil on fabric, brown on paper,
water colors, Chinese ink and carbon paper techniques.I was given an
award in 2003 in Guadalajara at the Hilton Hotel, together with all the
painters from Jalisco and other locals such as Lorena Ochoa, as an
example. The award was called "Pedro Sarquis Merrewe”. This same year I
participated in a contest in Degollado Jalisco representing my secondary
school, Juan Villalpando, and I won first place receiving a medal. I
finished a picture in two and a half hours during this contest.
In December of 2005 I was given the Young award in Tepatitlán de Morelos
Jalisco, for standing out as a painter and the development I´ve had as a
disabled person.I have to mention that in 2003 a group was formed to
provide emotional support for disabled persons and I was the founder of
this movement. This has helped me to promote my work as well as the
Association. The group is named fraternity of sick people or with
disabilities of Tepatitlán. I know that I will find more artists here
for this Association. In 2006 we suffered the loss of my sister Felicitas
Nuño, who left a mark in our lives. She also left us many life examples
since she was also a great painter. In November 2008 and April 2009 my
brother Antonio and I taught two workshops requested by the Municipal
Government. The program was called "Rescate de Parques y Jardines”
(Rescue of Parks and Gardens) and 150 students took part in them. The
government donated the material and we imparted clases in drawing, brown
over paper and water painting. In December 2008 we were awarded
recognition at the state level. We have been interviewed by newspapers
and local magazines such as the magazine Desarrollo Social (Social
Development), the newspaper Ocho Columnas (Eight Columns) and television
stations such as Alteña and TV Azteca.I give thanks to God for the gift
of this grand family, a mission in this life and, thanks to the
Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists I have a positive
attitude about life and I can show my creativity. The only wish I have
is to improve myself daily to be a better person and a good artist. My
motto will always be: "you will reach your goals only if you put forth
your best effort”.
